Can’t find a movie

Where to watch classic movies online, legally and for free.

If you’re looking to find a you’re streaming home, or just want to expand your search options. Take a peek at the sites below to see a selection of websites with some great choices in movies.

Please be aware, not all movies online that are “free” are out of copyright. Movies like My Man Godfrey and I Married a Witch, while both within the timeframe for copyright, didn’t have them renewed in time and so have been in the public domain for decades. If a movie is still in copyright, please choose to pay to rent it, via YouTube, Apple, Prime Video or another official channel, as it helps support the industry we all love so much. And piracy isn’t cool,

Having said that, happy viewing!

Youtube is always my first go-to, it has an array of movies from all eras. It’s especially good for silent movies. And when I say that I mean the if-it’s-not-there-you-probably-won’t-be-able-to-find-it-online kind of good.

Archive.org

Archive.org: a search here can find an enormous number of public domain movies (and even some that aren’t 😉).

Lost and Found: This is a new find for me, it’s a channel on Rumble that has huge numbers of old movies. Mostly sound films, they’re currently in the process of uploading every movie from 1929! If you sign up for an account there, it should take away most of the irritating ads. Also, be aware they use AI to restore and sometime colourise movies so it may not be to everyone’s taste.

Another new to me site, I’ve just signed up and have found a few classic movies already, including My Man Godfrey, some Laurel and Hardy and Alastair Sim’s Scrooge.

Library/Kanopy

Your local library frequently has movies but even better, you can borrow older ones online via Kanopy (but no longer in the UK 😔 unfortunately)

If you already have a Roku, it can be a good place to turn up older gems.

Then there’s old skool TV channel TCM. They have silents every Sunday night, except in August. I can’t view this channel anymore but I miss it. So if you do have the option, it could be worth a look.

BFI

The British Film Institute, does wonderful work preserving movies, form all eras. They frequently have movies available to  stream on their BFIPlayer. There’s also a paid subscription available that grants access to a larger catalogue of copyrighted movies and helps support their work, should you wish to.

Thank you Penny

Hoopla is another library access service in the same vein as Kanopy. Sadly, it’s also not available in the UK (I don’t know about other countries) but if you’re in the USA, this could be a good option.

Thank you Kristin

Harpodeon

Harpodeon are a film distributor specialising in rare and unusual movies.  It’s a really great place to find good quality prints of silent movies.

And if you still can’t find what you’re looking for, there’s always a good old Google search for the movie name and .mp4
